CHARACTER NAME: Christo Real Name: Lamington
CANON: Disgaea 5
CANON POINT: Between Chapter 9 and 10, before arriving at Toto Bunny.
AGE: 2147
BACKGROUND
HISTORY: Wiki link!
The story description is a little bare bones, but he's taken from before his big moments in Chapters 10 and 11. Many of the other chapters leading up to this point are more focused on the other characters with him occasionally speaking to his superior. The only thing I would add in regards to the story summary is that he was the one to approach Killia's group, having recognized them as powerful pawns in his revenge plans.
Also I would like to note that, while the wiki there is playing both sides as to whether or not Christo is a younger Lamington, DisgaeaRPG all but confirms it, pointing out that Lamington was more wild when he was younger, that D5 took place far in the past compared to the other games, and by having Lamington as the only non-Disgaea 5 unit he has an increased team attack chance with (something the game frequently does when there are multiple versions of the same character in the game). This is all in addition to the ending alluding to him being involved in an incident involving the Human World, Netherworld, and Celestia; his alternate color palette in Lamington's colors;the same ultimate skill; shared Japanese VAs; and the fact that "Christo" is noted to only be a code name.
PERSONALITY:
I'll occasionally be including some notes from his character in the first Disgaea/Disgaea D2 if they're traits strong enough to persist into the future. What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature?
One's first impression of Christo depends on one very important thing: if he considers you a peer or a pawn.
He is incredibly manipulative, and will use (almost) any means necessary to achieve his goals. If you can be used to achieve those goals, he's more than happy to play nice, slip in the occasional bit of flattery, and go along with whatever goals you yourself may have--all while nudging you in the direction of his own. This quality even persists into the future, in the first Disgaea. While he feels no small measure of guilt for his actions afterwards, in the moment Lamington is more than happy to take a back seat and allow Vulcanus to continue his machinations, even as others end up wrapped up in his original plans that weren't supposed to. Even if he preferred less people suffered as a result, he also chose only to watch, not to intervene.
If you aren't part of Christo's plans or he considers you a peer or a coworker, his attitude is entirely dependent on how much smarter than you he believes he is--and as a "genius angel" he considers himself smarter than most people. While still willing to give people the benefit of the doubt (maybe less-so to demons as of his current canon point), it's not difficult to stumble into Christo's arrogance, or else earn a passive aggressive comment or two. Even in the future, after his character development and some mellowing out, Vulcanus receives a pointed passive-aggressive comment or two from Lamington after barging in with new conspiracy theories about demons.
It should be said, however, that despite his more unpleasant qualities, Christo is not a bad person by any means. He pursues most of his plans with the belief that others will be better off following them (Lamington's ultimate goal was understanding and the start of a friendship between the human world, Netherworld, and Celestia, after all). Even his big "revenge" plan against his angelic peers was to take out Void Dark, who he believed to be a danger even to Celestia, rather than visit any real harm on them. Even his belief that the ends justify the means doesn't rid him of the guilt he feels for manipulating good people, and he tries to do what he can to ensure more innocents aren't wrapped up in his schemes than necessary. He is ultimately a man willing to break rules and make hard decisions to do what's right, and someone open-minded enough to change his opinion of someone if proven wrong. How does your character handle stress? What do they do in an emergency?
Christo's immediate response to personal/emotional stress is to bottle it up, try to hide it, and handle his problems himself. This works about as well as you'd expect. He tends to hyperfocus on the object of his stress, mulling it over in his head over and over to the point of brooding or withdrawing from others, and if it's something that causes him too much distress, he tends to snap at others when they venture a little too close to the subject--all behaviors that he exhibits when in Chapter 11 he's presented with the choice of allowing several Netherworlds (and his newfound comrades) to be destroyed or losing the chance to clear his name.
When it comes to stress caused by danger/emergencies, on the other hand, Christo is much more calm and collected, able to concoct a plan on the fly or change course on an existing plan the moment a new opportunity expresses itself, and he will give orders/take command if necessary to enact that plan. What are your character’s ambitions/goals? Why are they important to your character?
At this stage, Christo's primary ambition is to kill Emperor Void Dark. While this would save the Netherworlds Void Dark has conquered and keep said worlds' energy from essentially being sucked up by Void Dark like a smoothie through a bendy straw, Christo's primary (or at least his initial) motivation is to get back at those who called him a traitor to Celestia and a spy for Void Dark by taking care of the problem himself.
And while some part of him may still believe that to be his motivation, the truth of the matter is that he's grown closer to the members of the Rebel Army and wants them to succeed in their own personal goals and be safe as well.
It's a nice little microcosm of his character in a way: while it may seem like what he does is for his own benefit or for the sake of his ego, ultimately the best world for everyone will win out as being at the forefront of his mind.
INVENTORY: An (inert) staff and a cellphone that cannot be charged or call out in the city (making an executive decision that since it can call between worlds, it probably needs some kind of magical charge or something like that).
POWERS
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Healing Magic: As an angel, Christo is highly skilled with healing magic, able to knit the wounds of several people at once and cure poisons with ease. It's noted in one of his skills that he's gone so far as to tweak his magic to make sure it works on demons.
- Light Magic: Christo is capable of weaponizing beams or arrows of holy light at his enemies, primarily through his skill Piercing Light.
- Enfeebling Magic: Christo has access to the spells Enfeeble, Mind Break, Armor Break, and Resist Break, which lower an enemy's strength, magic attack, defense, and magic defense respectively.
- Flight: Though he keeps them hidden, Christo has two pairs of large, white wings. While we only get to see him do it while power floating using Gospel of Power, he can probably use them to fly.
- Clairvoyance: Christo's special ability (Overload) is called Occhi Clairvoyance. Disregarding the in-game effects in favor for how it's portrayed in the story, Christo's Clairvoyance makes it possible for him to detect magical energy from long distances or to track specific energy signatures that he's familiar with.
- Healing Blood: Disgaea 4 puts forward the fact that ingesting an angel's blood cures any malady affecting an individual, magical or otherwise.
- Minor Disguises: Thanks to Disgaea 7, we have confirmation that it's possible for angels to use minor disguises with magic to fit in with demons. For Christo, I'm extrapolating that fact to assume that he's using said magic to make his ears look pointed and change his eye color from blue to red.
NERFING: (Borrowing the above and switching out descriptions for nerfs.)
- Healing Magic: Christo will only be able to heal scrapes and bumps on one person at a time to start off with.
- Light Magic: Christo will not have access to his light magic until he gets his first power boost reward, and when he does, rather than a magical array of light arrows, he'll be limited to one thin beam (with more concussive force than piercing) at a time. No matter how much power of friendship character development he goes through he will not be getting Gospel of Power.
- Enfeebling Magic: Christo will have access to Enfeeble only, which will only make people feel maybe 5% weaker physically. It will not affect magical attacks. After
leveling upgetting his first power boost reward, he will get access to Magic Break as well, which will cause a disruption in magical ability, making just magic 5% weaker. It will not affect physical ability- Flight: I feel like I'm giving him a lot, so he's not allowed to fly anymore. If he gets comfortable enough to show off his wings, it'll be a symbol of character development only.
Also he's not a flying unit in Disgaea 5 anyway- Clairvoyance: No matter how powerful his Clairvoyance gets through regains, Christo cannot be doing anything else while using it--it requires his utmost focus, and he can be physically interrupted or startled out of it. Its range will remain within a few blocks to start out with, but won't extend further than the district he's in even at max regain.
- Healing Blood: This one I'd like to keep fairly high in power if possible for one reason: it's forbidden by Celestia for him to make use of his blood in this way or even make it known that it's possible to do so. He has enough confidence in his own abilities and resourcefulness that he'll avoid resorting to using his own blood unless he has no other choice AND deeply trusts the person he's helping. If a nerf still needs to be in place, maybe only for non-lethal maladies and/or only if taken early?
- Minor Disguises: I'd like to leave this one as-is.
WEAKNESSES: Despite having access to the above, he's not strong at all physically and is easily overpowered without access to his magic. He's mostly healing and support.
